Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to question specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
